Best Album of The Year (so far) - The National - Boxer

The National are a fantastic band, but I don't think they've ever really gotten a fair shake here in Austin. I've seen them live here in Austin twice and both times they've played second banana to the other band they were touring with. Most notably was probably their Oct. 2005 show that included Clap Your Hands Say Yeah in the opening slot. This album is going to ensure that the next time their tour bus rolls through town, people will be there to see them and not the other acts. Boxer doesn't break any new ground for The National, but my god it's so good. Track 2, Mistaken For Strangers, is the big winner for me. Matt Berninger's lyrics and his knack for long winding verses that crash into each other are as strong as ever. "Surprise, surprise they wouldn’t wanna watch/ another uninnocent, elegant fall into the unmagnificent lives of adults" he sings on Mistaken, just a hint at the the highly literate lyrical content to come. Every strong point from their past albums is here, only it's tighter, thicker, fuller, basically just improved in every way. If The National of 2003 is The National v1.0, the band is now The National v1.5. There has been no radical redesign but everything is improved. The highs are higher and the previous lows have been thrown in the trash. Head to their Myspace page to hear a few songs from the new album.

Ours tonight @ Stubbs

Tonight one of my all time favorite bands, Ours, is playing at Stubbs' indoor stage. Ours is probably best known for their quasi radio hit Sometimes from back in 2001. To their fans, the band is much more than just a one hit wonder. Ours' third studio album, Dancing For The Death Of An Imaginary Enemy, was recorded over the last few years under the helm of Rick Rubin. The album has been finished and the band is just waiting for a label to release it on. No date as of yet on when, or on which label (Columbia Records is the current belief) the album will end up getting released. Ours is one of those bands that you might say has a "cult following". They haven't been on the air in heavy rotation in over 5 years, but you can bet that the show tonight will be full, just as it was a few months ago when they last rolled through town. Tickets are $15 and the doors are at 8pm. April Bauer opens.

Feist on a bus

Feist performed the song I Feel It All from her new album The Reminder, on Jimmy Kimmel Live the other night. The whole show was filmed on a city bus while it drove around town. The whole thing seemed a bit schticky to me, but Feist's performance is so great. She is too goddamn adorable.

The Lemurs...again

Quick reminder. The Lemurs, tonight at The Parish. It's a buck to get in. This reminder is really just an excuse to post this live set that they recorded during SXSW for WOXY. Enjoy, and see you tonight at the show.

AOL has the first bit of the new Smashing Pumpkins album, Zeitgeist (out 7/7/07). It's a 30 second teaser of the album track Tarantula. Upon first listen all I can really say is that it sounds about how I expected it to. For lack of a better term, it sounds like the Pumpkins. Don't expect any Siamese Dream sounds here, it's much closer to the Adore/Machina era sound. With all that being said, honestly, I was expecting to hate this, but I don't at all. Gives me a little tiny bit of hope that the album might be decent afterall.

The Lemurs at The Parish Room

101X is hosting another installment of their Homegrown Live concert series at The Parish Room on Wednesday May 16th. If you haven't had a chance to check out The Lemurs yet, this is a fantastic opportunity for you to do so. The show is $1, that's right just a buck. I don't believe there are any advance tickets available for this one, so show up early to make sure you get in. Doors are at 9 and The Parish website is advertising "amazing drink specials". Note the quote, their words not mine. Opening the show are locals Darling New Neighbors and Oh No! Oh My! So show up early for "amazing drink specials" and some of Austin's best bands on the cheap.

An Introduction

Here we go. My name is Danny. I am 24. I live in Austin, Texas. South Austin, Texas to be exact. I am a music freak. Not only am I a music freak, I am a highly opinionated music freak. I probably live in the best city in the world to be a highly opinionated music freak. Because I am such a highly opinionated music freak from time to time my friends suggest that I should start a website of some sort. The problem has been that I am a pretty lazy guy. Well, I woke up today and decided that I'd try to change that. This blog is what you could call the first step in the process of delazifying myself. On top of my love of music, I really love the city of austin and the surrounding hill country. I'm going to attempt to combine those loves here. I'm just getting started and the ideas are a bit hazy, so I'm not sure exactly how this is all going to work. Things to expect from this URL address are as follows;

1) Music, more specifically music from austin, and music taking place in austin.
2)Austin events.
3)Whatever else I decide to post about.

So in summation, there will be talk of music, and there will be talk of austin, and then there will be other stuff. Vagueness be damned, hopefully some of you will like it.

Feel free to leave me a comment or to send your opinions, thoughts, whatever to TheSoundOfMarchingFeet at gmail.com

Thanks

-Danny
